Steve Nester The smallest unit of the LDS church is the ward. A ward consists of at least 250 members. A stake consists of 5-10 wards. A single stake will typically have several physical churches, including the stakehouse, the largest meetinghouse within the stake. Churches and stakehouses are typically open to the public, and are where weekly Sunday meetings are held. Temples are completely separate buildings, and are only open to LDS members in good standing. Special rites (baptism for the dead, weddings, etc) are held at temples.
