Studios stick with old IP with familiar faces because the cost of production is so high. They want to reduce their risk by using actors and stories that have already proven popular. AI should drop the cost of making a production film or TV series significantly. While no doubt many will be content making fanfic with familiar faces, many people will want to see/make new works. Which they will soon be able to do for far less than the $100 million an effects heavy production currently costs.
