\"The drugs semaglutide (Wegovy) and tirzepatide (Zepbound) work by mimicking the gut hormones GLP-1 and GIP by binding to their receptors on neurons in the brain that control hunger. Now scientists have proposed additionally targeting the NMDA ion channel in the brain, which has previously been shown to be linked to obesity. "The drug uses GLP-1 as a Trojan horse, transporting small molecules exclusively into neurons that affect appetite control. Without GLP-1, NMDA-targeting molecules would affect the entire brain," explained co-author Jonas Petersen. \"\
