Elizabeth Jack I agree that most men aren't violent brutes.  However, men commit violent crimes at a much higher rate in than women.  For example, males are convicted of homicide at a rate of 9:1 compared to women. Violence is generally not an adaptive trait in _modern_ times.   However, "modern times" is charitably the last 300 years or so.  Evolution operates on long time scales, so anachronistic traits that were adaptive for most of our history are still widely prevalent.
