The writing / plot were excellent the first five seasons. Then the showrunners got bored / ran out of book to adapt and the writing fell off a cliff. I took the message of the series as "the good guys don't always win, there is evil in the world, but it's worth fighting for the good nonetheless". I particularly enjoyed the character of Tyrion Lannister. A dwarf, he was nonetheless able to best his enemies with wit, charm, and intelligence.
