Megan Thorsen IMO, academics should value a commitment to the discovery of truth. The truth cannot be easily ascertained if truthseekers are being censored / banned. Many progressives not only stood silent while people were being banned / censored on pre-Elon Twitter, they cheered the censorship on. If it were up to many Democrats, Musk would be in prison now: https://www.theguardian.com/commentisfree/article/2024/aug/30/elon-musk-wealth-power Yet, are progressives leaving because they are themselves being censored/banned, now that the tables have turned? No. They are flouncing because they're no longer able to censor others. IMO, that's contemptible behavior. (And, yes, ideally, we'd live in world where people were more polite and didn't delight in trolling / sexual harassment. But such things existed long before Elon took over, Twitter and will likely always be a problem. Dealing with such things is just part of being a public figure. )
