Taryn East "Pooling resources" is fine if it's done on a voluntary basis.  But when it's done at the end of a gun, it's called "extortion".  (It's weird to me that leftists are so concerned about enthusiastic consent when it comes to sex, but have so little regard for the consent of others in every other aspect of life.) Productive people will tolerate some extortion because a) moving is difficult, and they typically want to stay close to the friends, family, and culture they're familiar with b) all government's extort their citizen's to some degree, so there are diminishing returns to moving. But when government's become too grasping, intelligent, productive people move away.  That's why many socialist governments impose strict emigration laws and capital controls.  They don't want their wealthy and productive citizens--doctors, engineers, entrepreneurs and other skilled citizens---to flee to greener pastures. If you build a successful company and become rich in many European countries, you can expect that the government will try to seize 70-90% of your wealth.  So ambitious entrepreneurs leave for the US and countries governed by somewhat less grasping governments. (Unfortunately, the US is populated by our own fair share of idiots--if it were up to me, anyone with a STEM degree would immediately get a green card, to make this process easier.)
