Ryan Entwistle Libertarians are generally in favor of insurance. Insurance helps people avoid the risk of ruin from high cost, but low probability events. However, libertarians oppose the rent seeking regulations that insurance companies lobby for themselves (mandatory insurance, restrictions on cross-state competition, tax privileges for employer provided coverage, etc). They also oppose the state-run insurance monopolies, price controls, coverage mandates and other coercive schemes that socialists tend to advocate.
