Historically, the problem has been that the cognitive overhead is too great: https://www-users.cse.umn.edu/~odlyzko/doc/case.against.micropayments.pdf With the advent of cryptocurrency, it may be possible to get the cognitive overhead low enough to make micropayments work. For example, the Fountain app (for podcasters) tries to do this. It has a built in Bitcoin wallet that allows you to Boost a podcast (ie send a tiny amount of Bitcoin) with a single click. Nostr apps also do the same for social media (except they're called zaps). XMRsuperchat allows you to send micropayments (in Monero) during live streams. But then you have to get people to adopt Bitcoin/Monero and these apps.
