Zeth DuBois Hostility to immigrants began long before travel become easy or the welfare state began  (the first Chinese exclusion Act was passed in 1880).  And the nativists are hostile to even high skill,  college educated immigrants or to immigrants from cultures close to our own in wealth.  Why, for example, cannot Australians, Kiwis, Brits, Canadians, HKers, or Singaporeans freely immigrate to the US?
