The hood slam was a test for weakness / show of dominance.  If a man meekly allows another man to abuse him, then his attacker will know he's weak.  The attacker will then escalate the attacks as far as he can, up to and including stealing the man's animals, raping his wife and daughters, and killing the man and his sons. At least that's what would've happened for most of human's evolutionary past.
