Laura Meyerovich > Nobody objects to a Haitian or Venezuelan plumber or nurse or businessman coming to US to tremendously improve their lot by using their skills here rather than there. Plenty of people object to immigrants coming to the US and competing with US workers. The first national immigration suppression law, the Chinese Exclusion Act of 1882 was passed to coddle white trade unions that didn't like competing with Chinese immigrants, who were willing to work harder for less money > benefits the existing citizens by bringing in labor, skills, entrepreneurial spirit, or capital, while not stressing the welfare system If the welfare state were the primary reason for hostility to immigrants, why were immigration suppression laws passed decades before the welfare state was created in the 1930's? Why aren't highly skilled (doctors, engineers, scientists, etc) or financially successful people freely allowed to immigrate? Moreover, why should immigrants be the only ones to be stripped of their freedom based on the possibility they will help expand the welfare state? Don't Jews overwhelmingly vote for and donate to Democratic candidates? Aren't Jews big donors to and staffers of the progressive indoctrination camps that universities have become? https://www.pewresearch.org/religion/2021/05/11/u-s-jews-political-views/ Do you think your freedom to live and work where you please should be sharply restricted because you might someday vote Democrat? What's the ethical difference between these two statements? It is unethical to strip someone of their liberty just because they were born a Jew? It is unethical to strip someone of their liberty just because they were born in Haiti?
