Brett Cashman In my view, the government should specify multiple vendors for any critical military supply line, including vendors located in other countries. That way, if the vendors in our own country are bombed/destroyed, we have others to fall back upon. Even if you think that critical suppliers (such as steel producers) should only be located in the US, it doesn't follow that tariffs are a good way to ensure an adequate supply. The government can require that all steel for defense contracts be produced in the US, for example. The rest of the country does not need to be forced to buy from more expensive suppliers. Empirically, the protectionist Jones Act has not stopped the massive decline of US shipbuiding capacity. If we really want industry to return / stay in the US, we should end immigration suppression laws, so that companies don't have to relocate overseas in order to produce products that can be competitive on the global marketplace.
