Ethnically homogeneous, white, wealthy Nordic states have even heftier welfare states than the US.   And just look at how much old natives scream when you propose taking away their welfare programs (SS/Medicare/Medicaid). Most people don't like being forced to pay for welfare for people who are from different cultures / races/ religions than their own.   IMO, the US welfare state would even bigger if we didn't have as many immigrants.
