Daniel Broweleit 5-MeO-DMT (a powerful psychedelic) was first discovered in the venom of the Colorado River toad. However, scientists have since discovered how to synthesize 5-MeO-DMT without first harvesting venom from the toad. So psychonauts are encouraged to use the synthetic version (which is chemically identical) to reduce the pressure on the population of the Colorado River toad. N,N-Dimethyltryptamine (aka DMT), another powerful psychedelic, is structually similar to 5-MeO-DMT. The two are often conflated with each other (as in this case) even though 5-MeO-DMT and DMT have very different effects and were originally discovered from different sources (river toad vs jungle vine).
