Freya Wilde Whether a member of the Shire Free Church or the Venturist Society can opt out of Social Security or other taxes will depend on the IRS. IMO, the reason the Amish/Hutterites are allowed to opt out is because a) they require significant sacrifice in terms of lifestyle that most people aren't willing to make b) they provide community support to their members such that they won't become a burden on the US welfare system. So, if you want to opt out, I think you'll need to create a voluntary system that credibly provides for its members an equal alternative to SS/Medicare.
