It's one of the best, certainly. I wouldn't object to giving it that title. I also wouldn't object to giving any of the following the same title: Akira, The Thing, Alien/Aliens, The Matrix, Terminator II, and Empire Strikes Back. (Star Wars, Terminator were genre defining and hugely influential, but their sequels were better movies so I listed them instead. ) Honorable mentions for Metropolis, 2001, Star Wars, Invasion of the Body Snatchers, ET, Close Encounters of the Third Kind, The Road Warrior (Mad Max), The Fly, Back To The Future, Dr. Strangelove, Star Trek II:The Wrath of Kahn, Groundhog Day, Galaxy Quest, Inception.
