If you are mistaken about immigration suppression laws then how could your views be "perfectly internally consistent"? Was Thomas Jefferson's ownership of slaves "perfectly internally consistent" with his views about human liberty? Were the views of Christian slave holders "perfectly internally consistent" with their Christian beliefs? If you were an abolitionist at the time, how would you have gone about trying to persuade them to change their beliefs?
