Nerdimus Maximus Immigration suppression and "papers please" travel restrictions have long been advocated by socialists. The first national immigration suppression laws in the US were pushed by white labor unions who didn't like competing with Chinese immigrants (who were willing to work harder for less money): https://www.facebook.com/archerships/posts/pfbid0qHxf6ydgwrwwLsNeW45iu9qoPtfeZDcQ4nNEwmms5PdPyNpDRnSTg1Y5kGN7LAsul Cato advocates for the end of border socialism, as they know that a centralized bureaucracy can't possibly collect enough information to make better decisions than the 340 million citizens each acting with local knowledge of their needs. (The "fatal conceit" of socialism everywhere. ) If border socialism were ended, borders would continue to exist, just as they do between US states, and between countries in the Schengen region of the EU. Most importantly, the government wouldn't be routinely violating the citizen's sovereignty over the borders of their own property: https://archerships.substack.com/p/citizen-sovereignty-not-open-borders Moreover, if the USG weren't spending enormous resources trying to keep people who were born overseas from living and working in the US, they would have a lot more resources to spend stopping actual criminals. Cato economists also understand that ending immigration suppression laws would generate vast amounts of wealth, due to better allocation of human capital: around $100 trillion to the global economy, purely by virtue of people being able to live and work where they pleased. https://www.forbes.com/sites/adigaskell/2019/05/17/making-the-case-for-open-borders/
