I enjoyed the movie overall. The casting was fantastic and all the actors did a good job. The upbeat tone was a nice change of pace from the grimdark period of DC superhero movies. Most of the jokes landed for me (especially the Peacemaker cameo). I don't think they motivated the villains very well. Why were Ultraman and The Engineer willing to fight and die for Luthor? Why was a team of highly skilled scientists and engineers willing to nearly destroy the Earth for him? See the The Penguin series for villains who are well-motivated. Watchman's Ozymandias was also well-motivated. I'm pro-immigrant but I thought that theme was delivered pretty hamhandedly--if I were anti-immigrant, I'd just roll my eyes. The inconsistent CGI physics broke the sense of realism. Superman's ability to take damage seemed to vary a lot. Also, what were the rules of the pocket universe? Why could Superman swim in the proton river without dissolving? I never felt like Superman or the other metahumans were in any real danger. Common problems with superhero movies, to be sure, especially Superman. But The Incredibles did a good job on these points, so I know it can be done.
