The public doesn't all agree on "common sense gun control" though. What you label "common sense" controls, others see as a euphemism for an incremental strategy to completely strip the civilian population of the means of self defense. Anti abortion activists use the same tactic; they're not banning abortion, they're calling for "common sense" abortion regulations. Regulations which, coincidentally,  make it costly/difficult to get an abortion.
