Izdaari Eristikon Authoritarians can always come up with some allegedly pragmatic justification for restricting other people's liberty: Vaccine paternalists argue that the unvaccinated put other people in danger, and increase the burden on the healthcare system. Gun grabbers argue that increased access to guns causes more accidents, suicides, and murder/robbery, and therefore result in an unacceptable burden on the healthcare system / criminal justice system. Islamophobes argue that letting Muslims travel freely increases the risk of terrorist attacks. Drug warriors argue that letting people freely use drugs increases healthcare costs and crime. Carceral feminists argue that sex work causes increased sexual assault. Censors argue that free speech leads to the propagation of racism, Communism, misogyny, religious fundamentalism which in turn leads to the destruction of the family, spread of venereal disease, sexual assault, hate crimes, etc. Immigration suppression is just another example of the authoritarian ratchet, where previous authoritarian policies are used to justify more authoritarian policies. The principled libertarian believes that all people deserve the presumption of liberty, and that their liberty should only be taken away if and only if they've committed a crime (with an actual victim) after a fair trial. Immigration without government permission does not meet that standard, and therefore should be rejected along with all of the other infringements upon liberty that libertarians reject.
