Leela Hann-Soden People can survive, for a time, on very limited diets. For example, I've seen studies that where people didn't eat anything but butter and potatoes for a year with no apparent deficit. However, it seems likely that such restrictive diets cause problems over the long term. I personally know a number of former vegans who say they felt much better after adding meat, eggs, dairy, fish to their diet. That said, I also think it's plausible that many people eat too much meat. The preponderance of evidence I've seen so far suggests that most humans do best on a varied, mostly plant-based diet, with some fruit and meat/dairy.
