Joe Allen Most property taxes in the US are paid at the city level. The people who typically push the hardest to repeal property taxes are retired old people. Retired people typically no longer have an income, and have already made most major purchases. So the burden of increased income taxes and sales taxes to replace property taxes wouldn't fall on them. I don't see how shifting the tax burden from old people to others is a net good. Old people already receive massive amounts of welfare in the form of SS and Medicare. Old people are also the biggest obstacles to zoning reform. Restrictive zoning is the biggest driver of housing costs (as zoning laws prevent sufficient new construction to meet the demand.). I have trouble sympathizing with people who are paying higher taxes because they've driven up the price of housing by severely restricting the supply.
