Caleb Ramsey The Chinese were banned because they were willing to work harder for less money than whites. So white labor unions lobbied to get them banned, The 1880 Census counted about 105,465 ethnic Chinese in the U.S. out of a total population of 50,155,783, which is approximately 0.21% of the population. Majority Chinese countries like Hong Kong, Singapore, Taiwan are all relatively free market, wealthy, Westerniized countries. So, given the tiny fraction of the US that were Chinese immigrants, and the fact that majority Chinese countries have adopted Western norms, the notion that Chinese immigrants could not have assimilated to the US is just jingoist nonsense.
