Caleb Ramsey I think many people back then were hesitant to allow Chinese immigrants into the US.  The Chinese Exclusion Act passed after all.  But I think the anti-Chinese propaganda was pushed by lazy union thugs not wanting to compete with the Chinese, not because the Chinese at the time represented any threat to US culture, and/or could not assimilate to US culture.
