Jonathan Hurley Yeah,  it's done primarily to reduce the cost of making phones as slender as possible. Vapes, flashlights, cameras all can be made to IP68 standards with removable batteries.  Phones too, even today.  I want a phone that takes 18650 batteries.  But clearly that's a very niche desire, as evidenced by the lack of phones that offer that feature.
