Elise Hecht That sounds plausible to me. I also think that traveling was much more arduous and costly in the past. And the standard of living didn't vary as much between countries. Being poor in Spain wasn't much different than being poor in England. So there wasn't much incentive to move, unless you faced death (from plague or starvation) if you didn't. (Or you were enslaved or part of a military campaign.) Since the rate of migration was low, new immigrants could be absorbed relatively easily, without triggering xenophobia. Nowadays, someone moving from South America, India or Africa could 10X their lifetime earnings by moving to the US. The cost of moving is much lower.
