Hardware catch: there are almost no new .32 S&W Long-only guns; you buy a .327 and feed it .32 Long. Ruger LCR .327 ~$700-750, SP101 ~$850-950, S&W 432/632 UC ~$750-850, Charter Arms Professional (.32 H&R) ~$500-550, used S&W Model 31 ~$400-700 if you can find one.

Rifle option: .22 Hornet
The classic centerfire .22 replacement for small game in a rifle. Full-power loads are not cheap; cast-bullet gallery loads (3-4 gr fast powder) approach $0.20/rd. Primer (small rifle) $0.07-0.09; powder 11-13 gr Lil’Gun $0.07-0.08 (gallery ~$0.02-0.03); bullet 35-46 gr $0.06-0.12; brass (PPU ~$0.60-0.80 new) $0.03-0.06 amortized; total $0.25-0.30 (gallery ~$0.20-0.23). Why the others fail

Drop at 100 yards (zeroed at 50): 9mm ~10-12 in; .38 Special ~14-18 in; .357 ~7-9 in. All point-and-shoot inside 50 yards; none are long-range tools. Hunting utility

Platform comparison

A squib is handled by pulling the trigger again. - No magazines to lose; simpler lockwork; a quality steel revolver (S&W K/L-frame, Ruger GP100/Security Six) outlasts decades of abuse. - 100% brass recovery; one .357 gun shoots .38 Special, .38 +P, and .357 – three power levels. - Downsides: 5-6 round capacity, slow reloads (3-6 s vs 1-2 s mag swap), heavier, harder DA trigger.
Semiauto (9mm): - 15-18 round capacity, fast reloads, flatter/lighter carry. - Parts and magazines are the most common on Earth. - Weak or handloaded rounds that barely cycle are where semiautos fail; a squib requires clearing a bore obstruction before the next shot. - Scatters brass 3-10 ft – case loss hurts a reloader badly.
Carbines: .357 lever guns (Marlin 1894, Henry Big Boy, Rossi R92) are proven, simple, and deer-legal in most states; 9mm PCCs (Ruger PC Carbine, AR-9, MP5 clones) are excellent defense/utility carbines with magazine commonality and suppressor hosts, but are not deer guns.
Ammunition availability in a collapse
9mm is the world standard – NATO issue, default police/military caliber across most of the planet, most-produced US pistol cartridge. Looted ammo, abandoned depots, and other people’s stashes will be overwhelmingly 9mm. .38 Special is an American civilian revolver round – popular in the US (every Walmart that sells ammo carries it) but globally a rounding error. Framing: 9mm maximizes finding ammo you did not bring; .38/.357 maximizes using ammo you can make, recover, and stretch. With a 2,000-5,000 round stockpile plus components, the scavenging advantage shrinks; living off what you find, it is decisive.
Suppressors and quiet loads
.38 Special is naturally subsonic (148-gr WC at 750 fps is well below the sound barrier) – movie-quiet through a suppressed lever gun or .357 bolt action. Caveat: a revolver suppresses poorly (cylinder gap); the quiet .38 load needs a long gun. 9mm wins on suppressor-ready host platforms (147-gr subsonic in a PCC or pistol is the standard proven setup).
Parts and repair
9mm semiauto: springs, extractors, firing pins, mags are the most common gun parts on Earth; semiautos DO break them with hard use. Revolver: fewer parts, runs dirty for thousands of rounds, but a failed hand spring or cylinder stop is a gunsmithing job and lockwork spares are not scroungable. Net: 9mm gives better odds of finding parts; the revolver gives better odds of never needing them – push.

5. The semiauto question: no .38 Special pistols
No manufacturer makes a .38 Special semi-auto today, and none has since 1993. The rimmed case (.440” rim) was designed for revolvers; semiautos feed rimless/semi-rimmed cases from magazines, and rimmed cases stack badly and headspace unreliably. The only rimmed-cartridge semis in production are .357 Magnum (Coonan Classic, Desert Eagle .357), and neither reliably cycles .38 Special – the Coonan needs a recoil-spring swap and still will not run light wadcutters; the Desert Eagle’s gas system needs high-pressure rounds.
The collector exception: S&W Model 52
Bullseye target pistol on the Model 39 frame, 1961-1993, three variants (52, 52-1, 52-2). Chambers ONLY flush-seated .38 Special full wadcutters (typically 148-gr over ~2.8 gr Bullseye, ~735 fps), holds 5 rounds due to the rim, discontinued when the 30-year-old tooling broke down. Real 2025-26 market data: LSB Auctions $1,425 sale; True Gun Value 52-2 average ~$1,000-1,400 (recent sale ~$973); GunBroker 52-1 at $1,295; Griffin & Howe $1,000 sold. Expect $1,000-1,800 shooter grade, $1,800-2,500+ for excellent/boxed; spare magazines $125-200 and scarce. It will not feed round-nose or semi-wadcutter loads, and it will not run hot loads – but a 148-gr wadcutter reloader is already set up to feed one.
Rarer exceptions: Colt National Match / Gold Cup .38 Special Mid-Range (factory 1911s, 1961, Mk III ~1971, priced at or above the Model 52) and custom gunsmith 1911 conversions (Jim Clark, Giles). All used-market.
The rimless cousins
- .38 ACP (9x23SR): the original 1900 Colt autopistol round; low pressure, obsolete, but any .38 Super gun fires it.
- .38 Super (9x23SR, semi-rimmed, ~0.9” case, .357” bullets, SAAMI ~36,500 psi): STILL IN PRODUCTION – Colt Classic ~$1,699, Springfield, Rock Island, Tisas (~$500-1,700). The classic bullseye semiauto round and the closest thing to a “.38 Special semi-auto” you can buy new.
- 9mm Luger (rimless, .355” bullets): the ubiquitous alternative, but different bullet diameter.
Will .38 Special reloads work in any semiauto? No.
.38 Special brass (rimmed, 1.155” case) will not chamber in a .38 Super pistol (Super chamber ~0.9”, headspaces on the smaller semi-rim). 9mm is wrong in every dimension. The only semis that chamber actual .38 Special are the Model 52, the Colt Mid-Range, and custom conversions – all wadcutter-only, flush-seated. There is no adapter or conversion barrel that makes a modern production semiauto run .38 Special. It is a revolver round.
6. Integrated recommendation
For a SHTF role in Idaho combining self-defense and hunting, with an existing 148-gr wadcutter reloading setup:
- Build the .38/.357 system, not a 9mm system: a Ruger GP100 or S&W 686 (.357 revolver) plus a .357 lever gun (Marlin 1894 / Henry Big Boy / Rossi R92) or .357 bolt carbine, sharing ammunition. 148-gr wadcutters for small game, practice, and quiet work; .38 +P 158-gr LSWCHP for defense in the revolver; 140-158-gr .357 JSP/hardcast for field defense and deer inside 100 yards. The existing reloading setup and load development cover the most-used half; the platform spans squirrel to deer, which no 9mm combination can.
- If the closest .22-LR feel matters more than hardware cost: the .32 S&W Long wadcutter in a .327 revolver is the most .22-like reloadable round, but the gun costs $500-950 vs $300-400 for the .38 route – “you lose nothing measurable per round” between the two.
- Honest costs of the choice: capacity (6 vs 15+), reload speed, factory ammo cost, and worldwide scavenging odds. Mitigate by stockpiling 500-1,000 rounds of .357 and 2,000+ rounds of .38 brass/components before any event.
- If the fight matters more than the hunt, run a complementary 9mm PCC + pistol pair (Ruger PC Carbine + Glock 17 share magazines) – many people run both.
- Do NOT rely on a .38 Special revolver alone for defense (underpowered, low capacity) or 9mm alone for deer (not ethical). The .38 Special cartridge is a small-game and backup cartridge; it earns its keep as the soft-loading half of a .357 system.
