DIY Chemical Manufacturing & Historical Formulas
This document catalogs books and guides (both historical and modern) that discuss manufacturing useful chemicals, including propellants, from commonly available household and hardware store materials.
1. Classical Formula Compendiums
These “giant” books were the standard references for small businesses and households in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. They contain thousands of recipes for everything from gunpowder to ink, soap, and medicines.
- Henley’s Twentieth Century Formulas, Recipes and Processes (Gardner D. Hiscox): The gold standard of formula books. It contains over 10,000 “recipes” including detailed (though historical) instructions for high explosives and pyrotechnics.
- The Scientific American Cyclopedia of Formulas (Albert A. Hopkins): A similar massive compendium covering industrial and domestic chemistry from the turn of the century.
- The Boy Scientist / The Golden Book of Chemistry Experiments (Robert Brent): Famous mid-20th-century guides that taught chemistry using materials that were common in 1950s hardware and grocery stores.
2. Specialized DIY Gunpowder Manuals
These focus specifically on the sourcing and manufacture of propellants from scrap or common materials.
- The Do-It-Yourself Gunpowder Cookbook (Don McLean): A primary resource for sourcing the three components (Saltpeter, Sulfur, Charcoal) from nature or hardware stores. It details the “Stump Remover” (Potassium Nitrate) and “Soil Acidifier” (Sulfur) sourcing methods.
- Black Powder Manufacturing Methods & Techniques (Ian von Maltitz): A more technical look at high-quality production, including the “CIA method” and specific charcoal selection for high reactivity.
- Gunpowder: Alchemy, Bombards, and Pyrotechnics (Jack Kelly): A narrative history that explains the technical evolution of the “corning” and “glazing” processes which turned crude powder into useful ammunition.
3. Modern “Low-Tech” Chemistry
- Caveman Chemistry: 28 Projects, from the Stone Age to the Glass Age (Kevin M. Dunn): A fantastic modern book that walks through the history of chemical discovery by having the reader re-do the discoveries (making fire, glass, soap, and eventually gunpowder) using raw materials.
- Illustrated Guide to Home Chemistry Experiments (Robert Bruce Thompson): A rigorous modern guide for the home hobbyist. It focuses on how to equip a professional-level home lab and how to source high-purity chemicals from common retail products.
- The Foxfire Book Series: Specifically volumes covering Appalachian folk skills. They provide “pioneer” chemical methods for making lye from ash, soap from fat, and tanning hides.

- Historical Accuracy: Many formulas in books like Henley’s use chemicals that are now known to be carcinogenic or extremely unstable (e.g., picric acid or mercury fulminate). Do not assume a “historical” recipe is safe because it was published.
