As I've aged, my sleep quality has declined. Actions that improve sleep:
* exercise
* avoiding alcohol
* blocking out morning light
I've also tried melatonin, 5-HTP, magnesium, and valerian root, both alone and in combination. If they have an effect, it's subtle enough that it's hard to tell from placebo.
One combination that does seem to help quite a bit better than placebo:
3-6 g kratom
1-3 draws on a weed vaporizer
This can knock me out for 8 - 11 hours. It gives me that warm, fuzzy sleepy feeling that I had when I was a child.
Kratom has opiate like effects, including addiction potential, so I only use it when I've had successive nights of sleep difficulty. And the combo can make me feel groggy long after I've woken up.
If you also have sleep difficulty, and nothing else seems to work, I recommend giving it a try.
