Michelle Tandler, a lifelong SF progressive, wonders aloud: Why does a city that has long been utterly dominated by progressives do such a terrible job of caring for the poor?

Here's some of the excuses she'll hear:
* SF can't raise property tax high enough to provide adequate revenue because of Prop 13.
* It's the rest of the country's fault for sending their homeless to SF. Only _national_ domination by Democrats (and thus, a national UBI, national housing program) will prevent the rest of the country from dumping their homeless on SF
* Although SF is nominally dominated by progressives, they're mostly rich techies, who are selfishly concerned most about protecting their classes interests, than about actually helping the poor.
* Although the stats say that SF now has a crime rate higher than Compton, crime rates are _down_ relative to SF's crime rates in the past (just not down as much as other cities).
