There are a number of parallels between San Francisco, CA and San Juan, Puerto Rico.
In both cities, many storefronts are boarded up. There's trash in the streets. Buildings are run down and in poor repair. (Though San Francisco is falling from a place of much greater wealth, so the buildings aren't yet the hollowed out shells they are in San Juan.) Many homeless people wander around in mid day.
However, there's one area where San Juan is doing better. When you go into a store in San Juan, the goods are still on display.
When you go into many stores in SF, entire rows of shelves are under lock and key.
